Wills for the New Year

Being in the military means thinking of the future, especially when faced with a new year. As a military family you already know the risks that go along with it. We all know the risks of war and when one goes away, in the military the spouse is always made to update his/her will before deployment. This makes everyone feels safe, especially those going away.

One thing I never realized was that his will wasn't mine. Granted I told him who I thought the kids should go to if anything ever happened to us and that's whom he put on the will. But it never dawned on me that if something happened to me that his will wouldn't be mine.

In other words if I didn't write my own I didn't actually have a will prepared. I never realized this until a meeting I sat in. It was a key volunteer meeting where I would learn that if I were to go into labor with my spouse not in the same area and no sitter, the state would keep my kids until I got out of the hospital or until my spouse or family could come down. I almost freaked at this thought, I'm one of those you really have to have my trust in order to watch my kids and to think I might have to do something like this all because I didn't have a will. I did ask the question, "Well my husband has one, doesn't that count?" That was basically laughed at and I was told that no that is his. If I wanted a will I would have to go down to legal and get one drawn up, or try getting my husband's section to do a meeting about Wills for the Wives. I loved this last thought, I couldn't be the only wife that had no knowledge that she really needed a will. Right?

If you don't have a will, you should get one! Make it your New Year's Resolution and this is one you can keep.
