Prince William’s Fly Moves

Prince William just earned his helicopter “wings” a few weeks ago and he’s already making headlines for questionable maneuvers. Personally, I think the entire brouhaha is quite humorous. According to British newspapers, Princess Diana’s first born was out flying a 90-foot, twin-rotor, troop-carrying Chinook last week when he decided to swing by his girlfriend’s parent’s house and show off a bit. The News of the World is reporting that William successfully maneuvered his helicopter in a field behind gal pal Kate Middleton’s parent’s home while she and her folks looked on. According to reports, the prince was only on the … Continue reading

Ancestry.com Free Military Searches

Over 43 million Americans have served in the United States military since the Revolutionary War. Each one has a story. In our own family, we have four who are currently active duty. They’re part of a long tradition of service, from my dad who used his brains in the Air Force to my grandfather and his brother who wore the Marine uniform proudly. It goes back further than that, though I’m far from the family historian. Ancestry.com is going to help me with that! Through D-Day (June 6th), military searches are free. Ever wonder if those stories about your Uncle … Continue reading

Can Military Family Members Suffer From PTSD

I am one of those people that can handle any crisis that comes along. I am the person calling 911 while delegating everyone around me to ensure that the situation is under control. I do this without thinking and I do it well but once the crisis is over I am the first person to crumble. My husband’s deployment was no different. I helped start a non-profit group that assisted the troops and their families, I was involved in every possible fundraiser out there, I was the person that others called when they were scared; all the while holding it … Continue reading

Being Military Around the Holidays

Being in the military can mean being away from family, not just your immediate family but you your parents, sister, brother, etc. How do you handle this? I’ve grown up military so for me this isn’t too big a deal but there are times that I become really homesick for mom and dad, especially around the holidays. I don’t remember many holidays but I do know that my family had HUGE family get-togethers, which means during the holidays I can grow very lonely when I’m hearing about all the family excitement. Yes, I do have my own but it is … Continue reading

If I wasn’t a Military Spouse

I’m going to take a bit of a challenge today and write about…If I wasn’t a Military Spouse. The idea came from Spouse Buzz, this should add a bit of fun to all those out there and I’d love to see your list. If I wasn’t a Military Spouse…. I never would’ve been married with four children. Okay, technically I’m married with three children and one on the way. But honestly if we weren’t military I don’t think we would’ve allowed anything past one…maybe two at the most. If I wasn’t a Military Spouse…I never would’ve moved as much as … Continue reading

Christmas…Military Style

December is all about the Christmas Season, and you know it’s Christmas season in the military when you go to the post office and have to stand outside because all the wives are waiting in line to mail those Christmas packages to their spouses. What I didn’t tell you is you’ll be noticing this the last week of November, not the first week of December like most people believe. Of course, you can attempt to send a package off to another country the first week of December but this doesn’t mean that they’ll get it in time for Christmas. If … Continue reading

Transition from Parenting to Friend

One thing I am learning as a parent is that letting go is a process. Although a child may have physically moved out of the home, there is still an emotional separation that has to happen. In addition, you are navigating new waters when it comes to your relationship. You don’t stop being a parent but you definitely stop parenting. For eight-and-a-half weeks my son was in basic training. Although I no longer had control over him, his training instructors did. In the past few days I have come to realize that deep down I found a sort of comfort … Continue reading

Service Dogs for Veterans

Training future service dogs Last month my mom sent me an interesting article from Smithsonian Magazine that she thought would make a good topic for the Pets blog (thanks Mom!) It was about the growing movement to provide service dogs to combat veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder. I’ve written before about two topics very close to this one: rescue organizations dedicated to providing dogs to veterans, and military dogs developing PTSD. Now the two are combined. The dogs provided by Pets for Patriots aren’t necessarily service dogs, though they do deliver a wonderful service for veterans. In this case, more … Continue reading
