Sappy Love Songs and My Husband

The other day, I was listening to a particularly sappy love song, sung by a man, and the thought popped into my head—are these lyrics representative of what a man really thinks about his woman? Or are these songs targeted to the female audience and therefore, only give the women what they want to hear? I asked my husband this question, and he shared some interesting insights with me. “The mushy songs, no,” he said. “But the songs that talk about faithfulness and feelings that endure, yes. Those are the songs that resonate with me and the way I feel … Continue reading

Pop Culture Potpourri: Whitney, WKRP, and Star Wars

Either Whitney Houston actually believes people care about her personal life or she really detests her ex-husband Bobby Brown. Personally, I think it’s a combination of both. Regardless, the award-winning songstress felt compelled to let the world know (via a public statement) that rumors that she is reuniting with Brown are “a complete fabrication.” Houston released the statement yesterday denying reports made in Wednesday’s Chicago Sun-Times that said she and Brown had been spotted in Georgia looking romantic. The singer says the newspaper article speculated that the exes were getting back together after divorcing in 2007 after 14 years of … Continue reading

Ten Months Old Part II

In my daughter’s short ten months she has become accustomed to her brother’s antics. For the most part she gets along really well with her brother and loves to watch him dance and play guitar (she actually finds it hilarious and goes into giggling fits). She has also developed her own love of music and she even has her own dance moves to songs that she recognizes and likes. While she genuinely enjoys all different kinds of music, she is a particular fan of playing children’s songs on the guitar with her daddy. Her favorite song is called “Yellow Bus.” … Continue reading

Recast Anxiety: Setting the Stage for Peaceful Scenes in Your Life

If anxiety plays a starring role in your life, it’s time to recast. You deserve the starring role. Anxiety need be little more than a subplot. Make that a cameo. No, even that draws too much attention to it. Anxiety should be one of those characters like “woman on bus” or “man reading newspaper.” You’re aware it’s there, and it serves a purpose, but once the scene’s over, you never think about it again. Certainly, this is an ideal scenario; it’s much easier said than done letting anxious thoughts go for good. But try to remember, you call the shots. … Continue reading

The Creative Card

Birthday’s come and go annually for all of us. It is a ritual that reminds us with some frequency of the passage of time in some calculable format. Somehow putting a number to a process as seemingly ephemeral as aging both comforts and frightens those who exhale over the lit candles on a cake while others sing songs that may or may not be owned by a corporation (but certainly shouldn’t be, right?). It is customary to give and receive both gifts and cards. Most cards will come from a store. The best one’s will be personalized with notes, smiles, … Continue reading

The Chin Hair Story

I have been richly blessed in my heritage. I am descended from wonderful people, and I have received talents and attributes from them that I appreciate. But I inherited one thing I wish I could give back … chin hair. I didn’t know I had this particular problem until one day that will live forever in my memory. I had been married for about three weeks. We lived in a cute little apartment and the bathroom faced north, and so it had really good light. One morning, I was in there putting on my makeup. I tilted my head back … Continue reading

It’s Beginning to Look a Lot like Christmas …

I’m the kind of person who likes to listen to the lyrics of songs. And I frequently take them too seriously, and nitpick them to death. I mean, things should make sense, shouldn’t they? One lyric stuck out to me in particular as I was driving out to do some Christmas shopping the other day. We’re all familiar with the song, “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot like Christmas.” In fact, I bet 99% of our readers here on Families.com can sing it from memory. We start out by talking about how everything looks like Christmas. There are trees, and … Continue reading

Green Musicians: Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam

You might not think of a Seattle grunge band as being politically and socially conscious, but Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam would prove you wrong. In fact, the band even has a section titled “Activism” in their official home page. The band, many times through spokesman Vedder, has always been vocal on certain subjects and promoted their favorite causes. The band has supported awareness of Crohn’s Disease, in part because lead guitarist Mike McCready suffers from it. They have fought against Ticketmaster for what they see as a monopolization of concert venues. They also try to follow a carbon neutral … Continue reading
